December 2016

In these winter times, came the time to have a good time by reading, in no time, this logbook.

During this very time, he announces tem ... porarily neither the rain, nor the good weather, nor the end of time but, fortunately, the festive times!

It is without wasting my time that I shall take time, to speak about an always coloured bird that we observe from time to time in the discretion of the time of our cruises ... see you in the section Life In Bali.

The Bio section will speak about an animal, vestiges of the former times, to meet most of the time in tropical water, although from time to time, he prefers fresher waters.

2016 aims at its end to give way to 2017. Meanwhile, Safari Bali will present so many sunny novelties. And it is at the appropriate time that all together we shall wish you the best time for 2017!

This section will treat of an often met animal (but generally ignored if it is not for its hosts), during our dives in Raja Ampat, Moluccas, Komodo, Bali.

Comatulid or crinoid? Frequently, we wrongly mix these two names. Yet, the comatulid is a subgroup of crinoids, a crossing of echinoderms.

Appeared 500 million years ago, the crinoids that we met generally arises from a recent evolution. However, there are always some species vestiges of the Mesozoic era.

Crinoids lives for the greater part in very big depths, in the bathyal zone (between 200 and 1000m of bottom) although there are sorts observed in the hadale zone, case of the family of bathy crinoids, filmed between 8 ' 175 and 9 ' 050 meters. Bouhhh it’s quite black over there! The species of crinoids living the least deep is in Japanese waters towards 100 meters down...

The crinoid, contrary to her sister the comatulid, is a totally fixed sort, attached to its substratum by the chalice. This organ, which we find at the comatulid

under egg-shaped shape, contains viscera and vital organs. Around this one fuss numerous arms, serving to bring, thanks to lashes, the food to the mouth. The crinoid is suspensivore... Hem? Carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, all right, but suspensivore? The suspensivore animals feeds on particles, fragment, and plankton in suspension.

The breathing is made by.... Yuk the anus! By permanent contraction what also allows the waste to be evacuated!

Crinoids is oviparous. The invisible reproductive organ for us is in arms. Females and males release their seeds which once fertilized will give birth to larvae. These larvae will know a pelagic phase, then a fixed phase. In the case of the comatulid, the chalice will be transformed and will turn into claws allowing it to hang on and to move. However the comatulid has an essentially sedentary life.

The hard body of the comatulid repels most of the predators, counting nevertheless some crabs and ballistae. In case of attack, the comatulid is capable of cutting clear its arms (as the tails of lizard) so protecting the rest of the animal. As most of the echinoderms, it possess a capacity of extraordinary regeneration… But there's plenty more fish in the sea… Ha not there?!

This end of year announces the beginning of the next season which will begin with Raja Ampat. It is quite naturally that I chose to speak about the Red Bird of paradise, Paradisaea Ruera, the endemic bird in the islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Saonek, met during this cruise.

First of all, I thought of presenting him in classic terms: food, nesting, courtship displays which confer him all his magic ... of all this, nothing you will read. It is through a more poetic legend, although sad by his reality which I let him to you discover.

The legend of the red Paradise bird:

This legend says that he would have been engendered by the volcano Krakatau, located in the strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java, to show to the men the way towards paradise. His wings of red colour, reminding the heart of the volcano, shone with miles fires in the sky. So the men who populated formerly these islands, attracted by the magnificence and the beauty of its scarlet colour, had no desire but to capture him. But his men had not understood that he

had been sent on earth to offer them what they looked for in vain for a long time: the paradise.

No, on the contrary, blinded by their greed, they pictured him only as one more magnificent trophy to add to their collection.

Thus they decided to pursue him nights and days relentlessly throughout the island.

But the bird seems to be imperceptible.

Till this famous evening, under a magnificent starry sky and by an almost tangible silence, the bird was attracted by the side of the crater lit by the moon. That one even who gave birth to him. The bird exhausted due to flying, decided to rest one moment at the base of the volcano. But the red Paradise bird, believing to be alone, lowered his

guard during a fraction of a second. It was an error, he did not suspect a moment that

Suddenly, the men jumped on him. Frightened, and probably in a gesture of despair, he tried to explain the reason of his coming, but he understood quickly by looking at their grasping eyes, that the men were not receptive. Not feeling listened to, the bird decided then to shut himself in a profound silence, and let himself capture without the slightest resistance, so abandoning its life between their hands. He was, in a beating of wings, sacrificed without the slightest remorse for his magnificent feathers glittering with scarlet reflections.
